NETHERLANDS-ZWARTE-PIET-DEMO
Police control anti-Black Peter demonstrators in Gouda, on November 15, 2014, as the historic city welcomes Sinterklaas, the Dutch version of Santa Claus (Saint Nicolas) and "Zwarte Piet" or Black Peter. Police detaining about 60 protesters. The figure of Black Peter, the traditional black-faced companion of Saint Nicolas during the Sinterklaas or Saint Nicolas festival celebrated on the evening of December 5, has become the subject of much controversy in recent years as some people believe it to be a racist caricature. The character first appeared in its current form in an 1850 book by Jan Schenkman and is commonly depicted as a blackamoor from Spain.
