Stratovolcano structure and eruption - HD stock video
Animation of an eruption of a stratovolcano, or composite volcano. The volcano opens up to reveal a cross-section. Under pressure, the magma starts to rise and the volcano erupts. The molten magma is released as lava, along with rocks, lapilli (small rocks) and ash. The lava is viscous and cools quickly, forming steep slopes on which layers of the cooled material accumulate. Repeated eruptions produce new layers each time, growing the cone of the volcano. The time between eruptions is typically long enough to allow plants and animals to recolonise its flanks and surrounds
