With the constant scream of new studies and researches, it’s hard to know what to believe when it comes to your well-being. Keri Glassman is a registered dietician and contributor to Women’s Health magazine. Keri, good morning. KERI GLASSMAN (Contributor, Women’s Health Magazine): Good morning. NATALIE MORALES: Okay. One of the main things that we should keep in mind here is this area or the science of nutrition and health research still kind of new science, right? KERI GLASSMAN: Exactly. And contradiction is the norm. NATALIE MORALES: Right. KERI GLASSMAN: I always remind people of that. And the best we can do is takes all the research into account including, of course, the latest research and our own personal needs when making health decisions. NATALIE MORALES: All right. So let’s get to some of the statements that we posted on our website and our viewers weighed in on what they thought was fact and what they thought was fiction. And we’re going to reveal the results. First belief is flossing is actually good for your heart. So ninety-one percent of our viewers thought this was true, that it was an accurate statement. Nine percent of our viewers thought it was false. We hear so much about plaque in your teeth being related to-- KERI GLASSMAN: Mm-Hm. NATALIE MORALES: --you know, heart disease. So what’s the truth? KERI GLASSMAN: Well, I’m not surprise that your viewers thought that because for years doctors have touted the link between periodontal disease and heart disease. This is because they thought that the bacteria in out teeth-- NATALIE MORALES: Mm-Hm. KERI GLASSMAN: --that cause gum disease gets into our bloodstream, causing an inflammatory response in our blood vessels which increases our risk for heart disease and stroke. However, the new thought is what happens in your mouth, stays in your mouth. The American Heart Association looked at over five hundred journal articles and studies. And they now say that there is no clear evidence that gum disease causes heart disease. But the net-net here is of course we should still be-- NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. KERI GLASSMAN: --flossing away to reduce gum disease and, of course, also to prevent bad breath. NATALIE MORALES: Right. Okay. So keep flossing. Next belief is, you shouldn’t eat soy if someone in your family has had breast cancer. Twenty-nine percent of our viewers thought that that statement was in fact true. Seventy-one percent think it’s false. So research says? KERI GLASSMAN: Well, soy is one of the most controversial topics in the nutrition world. And soy contains compound called isoflavones. Isoflavones mimic estrogen. And tumors in the breast are fueled by estrogen. So doctors for years have said especially if you have a history of breast cancer to stay away from the soy. NATALIE MORALES: Mm-Hm. KERI GLASSMAN: Studies have also even shown a direct link there. But a recent study looked at over ten thousand breast cancer survivors and it showed that when they had ten milligrams of isoflavones a day, that’s about the amount you’ll find in a half a glass of soy milk, they actually reduced the risk of recurring breast cancer. So people are throwing up their hands, what do you do? NATALIE MORALES: Yeah. KERI GLASSMAN: The recommendation is to have about one serving of real soy. So edamame or tempah versus processed soy like soy chips per day. And what I often tell people is, if that’s even too much for you, take out a couple servings of meat per week and add in a couple servings of real soy. So you’re reducing the meat and getting some of the benefits of real soy without going overboard. NATALIE MORALES: Okay. Good to know. Next one, fat-free salad dressing, the best choice. Eighty-three percent of our viewers responded they thought this was false, where only seventeen percent think it is true. KERI GLASSMAN: We all know somebody that still has their fridge lined with those fat-free salad dressings because the thought always had-- was, you know, take out the fat, lose the fat. We now know that fat is healthy for us for multiple reasons. One of them is absorbing fat soluble vitamins. NATALIE MORALES: Mm-Hm. KERI GLASSMAN: So it’s particularly important when you’re eating a salad because salads are loaded with some of those vitamins, particularly the carotenoids, it’s a big word there-- NATALIE MORALES: Yes. ERI GLASSMAN: --that help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and macular degeneration. That does not mean that you should go pouring on the-- NATALIE MORALES: Slather on the olive oil, right. Yeah. KERI GLASSMAN: --dressing. Definitely not. Add a portion of a clear salad dressing or the base is a healthy fat. And if you like that creamy dressing, I tell people to get those heart healthy fats from avocado and mix it with balsamic vinegar, it makes a nice creamy dressing. NATALIE MORALES: All right.
