Suddenly their quiet lives have been upset and I suppose that they will need a scapegoat. To them I must appear, a closed community you understand, to them I must appear not only an outsider but very much on my own, and I think this is a flaw in the system. But amongst these people are a number of progressive, conscientious, even gifted people and I think that a little consideration, a little thought given to the subject I think they will see I had no alternative if justice was to be done to those boys; that the Home Secretary was had no alternative in view of the difficulties raised by the Managers and their refusal to confirm to apparently reasonable requests and I think that when the sense of shock has worn off, many of the staff will not take extreme attitudes that they seem to be taking at the moment. (Did in fact any of your colleagues feel exactly the same way as you did and were you in any sense going to be a mouthpiece speaking the thoughts of others). No, I wouldn't put it quite like that. I would say that many of the things I said were ideas that were shared by certain other people of the staff. I suppose I felt more strongly about it than any of them did because after all I was the one that acted. (Do you now regret having brought this whole subject to light). Not in the slightest. There is an old saying, you can't make an omlette without breaking eggs, and perhaps I myself may be damaged in the process of making this particular omlette, but an enquiry, a searchlight into dar...
