- It's a pleasure to be here as only the second Chancellor since 1997 / And let us first recognise the great achievement of the longest-serving, the most successful Chancellor in modern times, Gordon Brown / And now the country knows his strength better than ever, after just 3 months as Prime Minister / And let's recognise too the tremendous achievement of another man with a clear vision for the future of our country / The man who led us to three consecutive election victories, Tony Blair / It's good to be back in Bournemouth / I'm told that in a recent survey, Bournemouth is the happiest place in the country / It seems that four out of five of the people here said they were happy with their lives / So with Labour down for the week, let's see what we can do to cheer up the 5th person as well / Party conferences do of course have their hazards / Indeed a new law of politics was written by the Liberal Democrats in Brighton only last week / Never be photographed with children, animals or now looking down an organic loo / I remember visiting a resort on the south coast / I don't think it was Bournemouth / and I was being shown around the town hall / One of these town halls that on the walls were the pictures of all the mayors in the town's history / The man taking me round was a little bit apologetic / He said that there had only ever been one labour mayor and that was back in 1940 when they expected the Germans to invade and the mayor to be shot / But even if Bournemouth isn't one of our natural bastions, the benefits of our Government touch places right across the country from Lerwick to Land's End we are here to serve the many not the few / So I checked out the unemployment figures here in Bournemouth/ I think I began to find out why people here are so happy / Just one and a half per cent unemployment in Bournemouth down by two-thirds since 1997 / And just ove...
