- Been a very good meeting and extensive discussion and has lbeen briefed on the negotiations with the Conservative Party. The Parliamentary party has agreed the main issue is to form a strong government. Proposals aired today reflect good progress. They asked for details in relation to fair taxes, voting reforms. Agreed that this needs to happen as soon as possible. They have agreed to listen to the representations from the Labour Party. Deficit reduction must be at the heart of any agreement.
Laws takes questions (Q&A session) from journalists SOT
- (Asked by BBC reporter Nick Robinson if they are in danger of playing both sides while the markets creak) We are seeking a stable government, we want to make sure we get these matters right.
- (Asked by C4N reporter Gary Gibbon if they are discussing a coalition or not) Without going into excessive detail, the clear signal sent out today is that it is vital we must have strong stable government, to tackle economic problems and bring down deficit.
- (Asked if they are making more progress with the Conservatives than the Labour Party) We have been negotiating with Conservatives as they have the most votes and seats. Hague has indicated areas where we have agreement on.
