Daikon-yagura (large frames for drying giant radishes) in Kagoshima, Japan - stock video

Full shot of (male) farmers hanging up giant radishes on a large, purpose-built frame for drying them. The frame is known as a daikon-yagura ("radish tower"). Daikon-yagura ("radish towers") are a common sight every December in Kinko, a town in Kagoshima Prefecture, in the southern part of Kyushu. The farmers construct frames of bamboo and timber for drying and preserving the newly harvested giant radishes. The frames measure anywhere from 30 to 50 m (and sometimes more than 100 m) in length, and are usually about 7 m tall, and have about 10 rows for hanging the vegetables. The radishes are left to dry for about two weeks, and then sold largely for use in pickling. The soil in Kinko is well suited to growing the radishes, while the cold, dry breezes blowing in from Kinko Bay are ideal for drying them.
