Lying in a sheltered position on the gulf of the same name on Corsica's mountainous west coast, Ajaccio is the island's capital and largest city. Forming the northern limit of the Gulf of Ajaccio, the Pointe de la Parata lies about 7 miles west of the city and affords fine views of the offshore islands known as the Îles Sanguinaires. Grande Sanguinaire, the largest in the archipelago, boasts a 19th century hilltop lighthouse, as well as an earlier semaphore station, now disused.
