The Mausoleum was constructed by the order of Timur in 1385-1405 upon the grave of Sufi poet and mystic Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. Features of the building influenced later Timurid and Central Asian architecture. Walls of the Mausoleum are made in banna'i technique (mix of glazed and plain bricks) and covered by names of Allah, Muhhammad and Ali written in square Kufic calligraphy.
