Yousuf Karsh, Armenian-Canadian photographer, 10th September 1991. Fleeing the Armenian genocide, Karsh settled in Ottawa, Canada, with an uncle who was a photographer and taught young Yousuf the rudiments of his craft from an early age. Karsh went on to become the greatest portrait photographer of the 20th century, taking pictures of "anyone who was anyone", including 20 covers for Life magazine. Renowned for his dramatic lighting in particular, his work included iconic images of Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway, George Bernard Shaw and Georgia O'Keefe among countless others and is collected by museums and galleries world-wide.
