Volunteer Medics Evacuate Wounded From Donbas Region's Frontlines

DONBAS, UKRAINE - FEBRUARY 21: Wounded Ukrainian soldiers are transported from the battlefield on a medical evacuation bus run by Hospitallers on February 21, 2023 in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian NGO is a non-profit of paramedics and doctors volunteering to treat and evacuate soldiers from battlefield areas. They operate the bus around the clock to assist the military in getting the war wounded out quickly to hospitals in moderately safer areas away from the frontlines. Hospitallers has more than 500 volunteers who work in two-week shifts as emergency responders. The organization relies on donations, both domestic and international, to fund the complex and often dangerous operation, including purchasing medical supplies and supporting the logistical needs of staff operating 32 ambulances and 76 pickup trucks, most in the war-torn Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. The volunteer paramedics come from a wide array of professions prior to joining Hospitallers and going through medical training. All are driven by the need to help Ukraine's war effort against Russia and relieve the suffering of wounded Ukrainian soldiers. (Photo by John Moore/Getty Images)
