Five Indian Army Troopers Missing In Kashmir Avalanches

Five Indian army troopers swept away in avalanches after heavy snowfall near the near Line of Control in Kashmir in Kupwara and Bandipora remained untraced after more than 24 hours, while an Indian Army porterÕs body was recovered. Avalanches hit Indian army posts in Kupwara and Bandipora, north of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir on Tuesday. Kashmir Valley, including the summer capital Srinagar, experienced seasons first snowfall yesterday, prompting the authorities to issue an avalanche warning and leading to closure of the Jammu-Srinagar Highway, the only road link between Kashmir and rest of India. Several areas in Jammu and Kashmir faced power cuts and parts of Kashmir, The snowfall damaged power lines at many places, including Srinagar. Minimum temperatures throughout the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region remained below the freezing point on Wednesday. Gulmarg recorded the lowest temperature at minus 9.8 degrees Celsius.
