US Soldiers Displaying Recovered Vermeer Painting

(Original Caption) Two American soldiers, T/5 Burnes Flanneby, of Elmhurst, Illinois (left), and Sgt. Robert N. Shook, of Almyra, Arkansas, exhibit the seventeenth century oil painting, Christ and the Adulteress, by Jan Vermeer which was found wrapped around a stovepipe in the castle where the Goerings lived in Berchtesgaden. The picture, estimated to be worth a million dollars, was given to Choista Gormans, a nurse, by Goering. When found, it was just as he had given it to her, protected only by a blanket and wrapped around a 4-foot length of pipe.
