The Island of Widowed Women in Nicaragua

CHICHIGALPA, CHINANDEGA, NICARAGUA - 2015/07/17: The Island of Widowed Women, a town that is located within the San Antonio mill and is actually called La Isla. Not only have high levels of poverty community, but the CKDu epidemic has led to the death of the vast majority of adult males. An epidemic of chronic kidney disease of unknown cause (CKDu) is now living in the Chichigalpa community of the Nicaraguan Pacific Coast. This disease mainly affects the younger men who work in the cane plantations. Some scientists suggest that the disease is related to the use of pesticides and fungicides with toxic substances (such as glyphosate) and the extreme working conditions such as high temperatures, excessive physical effort, dehydration, hours under the sun, without right to somba spaces. This is a reality throughout the Central American coast with Nicaragua is the most affected country. According to the Pan American Health Organization, 3,442 men died between 2005 and 2009.
