World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought in Turkiye's Kirsehir
KIRSEHIR, TURKIYE - JUNE 06: A stork walks around on the edge of the semi-watery Lake Seyfe, which is about to dry up, located within the borders Mucur district of Kirsehir, Turkiye on June 06, 2024. Despite the rainfall, the effects of drought continue in Lake Seyfe Lake Bird Sanctuary, one of Turkiye's most important protected wetlands. Since 1994, every June 17 has been commemorated as the 'World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought' by a United Nations (UN) resolution to draw attention to the problems caused by the threat of desertification. The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought aims to raise public awareness on issues related to desertification, land degradation and drought. Wetlands, known as one of the world's threatened ecosystems, continue to disappear. Apart from the biodiversity they harbor, wetlands, which function as fresh water sources and carbon sinks, are among the most valuable allies in the fight against climate change.
