Sotheby's Presents One of the Rarest & Most Historically Important Diamond Necklaces to Ever Come to Auction
LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 23: (EDITORS NOTE: Image has been retouched) Sotheby's unveils one of the rarest and most historically important diamond necklaces of noble and royal provenance to ever come to auction at Sotheby's on September 23, 2024 in London, England. It goes on display at Sotheby’s London until September 25 before presented for the very first time at a Sotheby’s flagship Royal and Noble Jewels live auction on 11 November 2024, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Geneva with an estimate 1,600,000 – 2,400,000 CHF / $1,800,000 – 2,800,000. Most likely created in the decade before the French Revolution, its provenance has legendary status. It was part of the Marquess of Anglesey family jewellery collection for about 100 years before it was sold to an important private Asian collector in the 1960’s and hasn’t been seen publicly for 50 years. It was worn on at least two coronations – George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and has multiple probably origin stories, the most tantalising being its possible link to Queen Marie-Antoinette and the scandal of the “Affair of the Diamond Necklace”.
