Google took a step 22 August, 2005 toward directly confronting rivals Yahoo and Microsoft with a new program giving users customized Web pages in a desktop window.The free program called "Sidebar" offers personalized information including e-mail, news, weather, photos, stocks or other content in a small vertical window on the side of a user's screen.The move is one of the latest by Google to expand beyond simple search functions and confront Yahoo and Microsoft's MSN as "portals" that direct users to various kinds of content on the Internet.
