Ralph Flanagan in Pool Shaking Hands with Adolph Kiefer
(Original Caption) Ralph Flanagan, of Miami, Florida, having smashed four world's records in the mile swim on the opening day of the Men's NAAU Swimming Meet in Chicago, shattered three American marks in the 440-yard freestyle on the second day. Covering the distance in 4 minutes, 46 seconds, he broke his 1936 mark of 4:48.6, as well as his 400-meter record of 4:47.8, and in passing the 300-yard mark in 3:14.2, bettered the 3:18 credited to John Macionis of Yale in 1935. Flanagan is shown in the water, being congratulated by Adolph Kiefer, who set a new meet record of 1:06.3 in the 100-meter backstroke.
