LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - 2021/08/08: A protestor holds a placard that says Declare military as a terrorist organization during the demonstration.
On 8th August 1988, students led what is now known as the 8888 Uprising in Myanmar's capital. They were rebelling against the military dictatorship headed by Ne Win. The uprising was met with violent repression and resulted in the mass killing of protesters. The Myanmar diaspora in the UK, led by National Union Government of Myanmar (NUG) campaigners, gathered at Parliament Square to commemorate the anniversary of the 8888 Uprising, and to express their solidarity with the NUG government in Myanmar.
