Germany Mourns Murdered Police Officer
MANNHEIM, GERMANY - JUNE 07: Police officers lay flowers at a makeshift memorial for the local police officer Rouven L. on June 07, 2024 in Mannheim, Germany. An assailant with a knife attacked people at a rally of a far-right political group at Market Square in Mannheim on May 31, injuring anti-Islam activist Michael Stuerzenberger and fatally wounding Rouven L. People and police associations across Germany are holding a moment of silence today at 11:34 to commemorate his death. The assailant is an Afghan national named Sulaiman A. who had been living in Germany since 2013. The incident has sparked a national debate, with political leaders insisting that Afghans who pose a threat to public safety shall be sent back to Afghanistan. Repatriations to Afghanistan have so far been on hold due to the Taliban regime. (Photo by Thomas Lohnes/Getty Images)
