Francois Mitterrand Gesturing and Smiling
(Original Caption) 12/5/1965-Paris, France: Francois Mitterrand, 49, his wife (L) and supporters smile as results of the French presidential election come in. President Charles de Gaulle, his popularity blunted by age and by seven years in power, failed to win a critical fifty percent of votes in the election. De Gaulle now must run against Mitterrand, a leftist candidate backed by the Communists, Socialists, and part of the Radical Party, in a runoff election if he is to carry on his campaign to serve again as president.
