Blood Ivory

MALOLOS, PHILIPPINES - JANUARY 28: Over 200 hundred Santo Nino Coronas housing Santo Nino icons wait in Malolos Basilica for a religious procession in the streets of Malolos, the birthplace of the Santo Nino phenomenon in the Philippines, January 28, 2012. Many of these icons have heads and hands made of solid Ivory, many of these pieces are made recently, in the post Ivory ban period. It is very difficult to tell whether this work is made from illegal ivory, of which there is a great deal in the Philippines, mostly used for the carving of religious iconography. What is for certain is that there is a thriving trade in the ivory carving for religious icon purposes. The Philippines has no elephant population but is one of the largest users of Ivory.
