THAM PIU, XIENG KHOUANG, LAOS - 2005/03/27: On November 24, 1968, at the height of the US secret bombing campaign in Laos, 374 people were killed when a bombing raid made a direct hit on Tham Piu cave. Local people regularly took shelter in the cave to escape the frequent bombing raids. Today the floor of the cave is covered in jagged gravel mixed with human bones. This small wooden shrine to the dead, filled with bones and bits of cloth, is the only memorial.. (Photo by Jerry Redfern/LightRocket via Getty Images)
