Campy was tending his Harlem liquor shop when word came that the Baseball Writers Association named him for the 1955 season by a vote of 226 to 221 for a runner up Duke Snider, Brooklyn's star centerfielder. After a slump in 1954 due to a hand injury, the Dodger backstop staged a comeback with a .318 average, drove in 107 runs and clouted 32 home runs.
