JING-MEI HUMAN RIGHTS MEMORIAL AND CULTURAL PARK, TAIPEI, TAIWAN - 2015/04/14: Military court rooms at Jingmei Military Detention Center where independence and democracy activists, as well as other political dissidents were tried. Now re-purposed as a museum, the Jing-Mei Human Rights Memorial and Cultural Park,the prison was where political dissidents were imprisoned during the White Terror period of martial law that lasted from 1949 until 1987. Notable former prisoners housed there included Annette Lu who later served as Vice President of Taiwan, Chen Chu, current mayor of Kaohsiung, and Shih Ming-teh, a political activist who spent 25 years in prison for his roles in the democracy movement.
