(Original Caption) A Marine court of inquiry opened in the drownings of six recruits whose drill sergeant led them into a swift coastal stream to "teach them discipline." One of the men was Pvt. Donald Francis O'Shea, 18, of Brooklyn, N.Y. The commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. Randolph Pate, who flew to Parris Island to set up the probe, said the platoon leader, S/Sgt. Matthew McKeon, "positively did not have the authority" to take his men on an unscheduled night march.
