RUSSIA-HEALTH-DISABLE
Marina Lisovaya, 25, who for most of her life has lived with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) sits in a wheelchair in her Moscow apartment during an interview with AFP on November 10, 2021. - SMA is a rare genetic condition that impedes muscle development and movement. The illness is progressive, causing muscles to weaken and eventually become paralysed. In later stages, a patient may not be able to breathe or swallow on their own. Two treatments have been registered in Russia and continues for life and costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, an impossible sum on an average salary in Russia.
