In October 1971 the Shah of Iran and his wife the Shahbanu hosted a lavish party in the ruins of Persepolis to celebrate the 2500th anniversary of the founding of the Iranian Empire by Cyrus the Great. More than 6o foreign heads of State and Royals, including Emperor haile Selassie, King Hussein, Prince Charles, Tito, Podgorny, Spiro Agnew were housed in opulent tents in the ruins. The extravagance of the festivities is said to have hastened the overthrow of the Shah.
