Germany - Imperial Abbey of Corvey in Hoexter
Imperial Abbey of Corvey in Hoexter, Germany, 13 April 2014. The Abbey was a Benedictine monastery founded in 815 by Charlemagne's cousins Wala and Adelard, with monks from Corbie Abbey in Picardy. It was secularized in 1803 under Napoleonic administration and the site was recycled as a palace, and it houses nowadays a museum. The Carolingian west end of the abbey, with its towers (built 873–885) are the earliest standing medieval structure in Westphalia, but its church is now Baroque.
