Randolph Pate Gesturing

(Original Caption) General Randolph Pate, Marine Corps commandant, is shown gesturing during his report yesterday to the House Armed Services Committee on the Marine drowning tragedy. General Pate told the committee that Major Gen. Joseph C. Burger has been removed from command at Parris Island, S.C., in a drastic shakeup of the supervisory system as a result of the deaths of six recruits at the base on April 8. At the same time it was announced that Staff Sgt. Matthew C. McKeon, 31, who took the recruits on the forced march at night through a tidal swamp will be court martialed. A board of inquiry into the Parris Island tragedy said in its findings that McKeon drank "an unknown quantity" of vodka during the afternoon of the fateful day while on duty as drill instructor.
