French paratroopers patrol the alleys of the casbah in Algiers on December 12, 1960, as violent demonstrations in favor of the FLN and independence rock the city. Thousands of Muslim Algerians descended on the European quarters of Algiers to cries of "Yahia de Gaulle", "Algerian Algeria" and "long live the FLN", on December 11, 1960, during the Algerian war, the day after of a demonstration by Europeans opposed to General de Gaulle's Algerian policy, which is touring Algeria as the United Nations General Assembly prepares to adopt the resolution recognizing the right of the Algerian people to self-determination and to independence. These first mass demonstrations by Muslims in Algeria since the start of the war have been accompanied by violence between the two communities and clashes with the police.
