Argungu Fishing Festival

ARGUNGU, NIGERIA - MARCH 20: A fisherman poses with his winning during the Argungu Fishing Festival on March 20, 2004, in Argungu, Nigeria. The Argungu Fishing Festival was first held in 1934. Then traditional chief of Argungu, Muhammadu Sama, held the festival to honor and welcome the Sultan of Sokoto Hassan Dan-Mu'azu who is Nigeria's supreme Islamic leader. The Sultan came to Sokoto in order to create peace between the Sultanate and the neighboring Argungu community. The two had been enemies since 1804 when Shehu Danfodio led a jihad across the southern Sahara to consolidate power under the Sultanate. Argungu had long resisted.
