(Original Caption) First Conquerors of Mount Everest. The British expedition which was the first to conquer the 29,000 ft. Mount Everest was photographed after their return from the successful climb at Thyangboche, Monastery in the Nepalese Himalayas. Among the climbers feted by the Monks were Edmund Percival Hillary, 33-year-old beekeeper from Auckland, New Zealand, and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay Bhotis, 39-year-old Nepalese, who made the final assault on the peak in the morning of May 29 and became the first men ever to set foot on the summit. Hillary has been appointed a knight commander of the Order of the British Empire, Tenzing has been awarded the George Medal, and Colonel John Hunt, leader of the expedition was also knighted.
