RETRO-EAST GERMANY-HONECKER-COMMUNISM
Erich Honecker (3rd-R), the first chairman of the East German communist youth organization Free German Youth, smiles as his fellow comrades vote his reelection as leader in 1946. Honecker was elected in 1971 Communist Party chief, becoming head of state from 1976 to 1989, when he was dismissed as a consequence of the anti-communist evolution. The German Democratic Republic (GDR) was established 12 October 1949 in the Soviet-controlled eastern part of Germany and reunited with the Federal Republic of Germany 03 October 1990.
