Darfur rebel chief Bahar Idriss Abu Gard
Darfur rebel chief Bahar Idriss Abu Garda (C) appears on October 19, 2009 at the International Criminal Court (ICC) with his lawyers in The Hague for a hearing to confirm war crimes charges over an attack that killed 12 African peacekeepers in the Sudanese region. Abu Garda, 46, said on October 16 that he was confident he would not face trial on war crime charges over the September 2007 attack on the Haskanita military base in north Darfur. The Justice and Equality Movement leader is the first person to appear before the ICC for alleged war crimes committed in Darfur, western Sudan, and is the first to turn himself over to the court voluntarily.
