Clyde Powell Leaving the Witness Chair
(Original Caption) Clyde L. Powell, ousted Federal Housing official, leaves the witness chair after refusing for the third time to answer questions of Senate investigators in face of testimony that he accepted "influence" payoffs and ran up huge gambling debts. In background is Sen. Homer Capehart, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee probing FHA scandals. Powell invoked the Fifth Amendment. He is slated to appear Oct. 6 before a federal grand jury also investigating housing scandals.
