NEW YORK, UNITED STATES: Claude Monet's "Nympheas" is seen at Sotheby's auction house in New York 01 November, 2002. Sotheby's will host a sale of impressionist and modern art next week. According to Sotheby's, the painting is expected to sell for 16,000,000 to 20,000,000 USD. The European Commission 30 October fined auction house Sotheby's 20.4 million euros (20 million USD) for illicitly fixing fees with rival Christie's, ending a high-profile probe into the rarified world of fine art. The investigation by the European Union's executive arm began in January 2000, when former Christie's chief executive Christopher Davidge approached both Brussels and the US Department of Justice with damning evidence of a cartel.
