CHN: World's Highest-Altitude Train In China

LHASA, CHINA - JULY 11: A Chinese train stewardess waves as the new Qinghai- Tibet train gets ready to leave Lhasa station on July 11, 2006 in Lhasa, China. On July 2nd 2006 the first train from Beijing to the Tibetan capital Lhasa pulled in to its final destination after an epic two-day journey on the highest railway in the world. It took 40 years and more than US$4 billion to build a railway across Tibet's plateau. The train to the top of the world will change this magical place forever. It took 50 years for tourism to Tibet to top he one million mark, last year. Within only two more years, that will double again, as the train brings up to 6,000 tourists a day, largely Chinese on group tours, along with more Chinese products, troops and ideas to the Rooftop of the World. Many here worry about the influx not only of more migrant workers to take their jobs and houses, but also gangs and drugs. (Photos by Palani Mohan/Getty Images)
