Charlotte Despard planning an election campaign, 1918
Charlotte Despard planning an election campaign, 1918. Gelatin silver print. ‘Mrs Charlotte Despard, the Suffragette, plans an election campaign. ’ Charlotte Despard (1844-1939), suffragette and social worker, was a tireless campaigner. She became a leader of the Militant Suffragette movement with the Pankhursts, and in 1907 she was arrested during the 'Women's Parliament', demonstration and sentenced to three weeks in prison. She was editor of 'the Vote', and in 1918, she stood as Labour candidate in Battersea. She is seen here planning her campaign in the ‘Win the War’ election. In Ireland she campaigned against the British policy of internment, visited the Soviet Union and fought against fascism until the end of her life.
