Boston man to attempt to swim across English Channel, Charles Toth, a waiter at one of the Boston Hotels and noted as the most popular swimmer at Boston's most prominent swimming center will attempt to swim it next summer. The distance across the Channel from Dover to Calais, is 21 miles, and has been covered only twice, by Captain Mayhew Webb and William T. Burgess, both Englishmen. More than fifty, men and women have tried to make the distance but have failed. Toth feels confident that after a period of training he will be able to negotiate the hazardous crossing.
