Horse Racing Industry Faces Uncertain Future Post Brexit As Questions Over Irish Border Remain

Around 10,000 thoroughbred horses pass through its doors each year, many traveling from stables in Ireland. The horse racing industry provides jobs for around 30,000 people in Ireland alone and generates approximately £5 Billion GBP annually for the combined British and Irish economy. In 2017 roughly 26,000 thoroughbreds moved between France, Ireland and Britain. Around 60 per cent of racehorses foaled in Ireland are exported, 80 per cent of those to the UK under what is currently known as a tripartite agreement, which allows tariff free movement between the borders without veterinary or document checks, and is seen as being essential to the future of the industry. As Brexit looms, and a possibility of a Hard Brexit approaches with the UK remaining outside of the customs union and the single market, the future of that arrangement is in doubt.
