Pain Block

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, CO. - MAY 16: Ashlee Lipinski relaxes with her dog, Lily, after physical therapy at her home in Greenwood Village, CO May 16, 2013. Ashlee, with the help of neurosurgeon Giancarlo Barolat, has finally found some relief for unendurable knee pain after dozens of surgeries and fruitless interventions. The 17-year-old, who had her kneecap dislocated at age 14 in a freak kitchen accident, tried for years to get her life back together amid searing pain from the resulting nerve syndrome, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. Barolat, a surgeon of last resort for many neurological patients at Presbyterian-St. Luke's, cut deep into Ashlee's back to install electrical leads; those are connected to a battery pack also embedded in Ashlee's back. The electrical impulses block and scramble pain signals, giving Ashlee back some hope that she can leave behind dangerous painkillers altogether and get on with the life she intended of rock climbing, running, soccer and a potential nursing career.
