(Original Caption) As Chinese Communist forces close in on Shanghai, thousands of the city's citizens have been fleeing by any means of transportation possible to places they hope will be a refuge. This photo shows a typical scene along the road leading out of Shanghai as Chinese on foot, bicycle and rickshaw cause a perennial traffic jam that slows the exodus down to a crawl. As for motor traffic, it too is bogged down by the stream of humanity on the run.
