KANDOVAN VILLAGE, KANDOVAN, KANDOVAN AZERBAIJAN PROVINCE, IRAN - 2009/08/17: An old oil lamp is seen inside a local house.
The tiny village of Kandovan (aka Kanvan), in the Iranian East Azerbaijan Province is known for its cliff dwellings, not built on the rock formations, but carved into the volcanic rocks themselves. The cone-shaped rock formations are due to the water erosion of the porous acidic matrix, developed after the eruption of the Mount Sahand in the Central District of Osku County. The rocks also act as an energy efficient material, keeping the houses warm in winter and cool in the summer. As of the census of 2006, the population in the village was 601 people, from 168 families. (Photo by Rahman Hassani/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)
