CHIANG MAI, THAILAND - 2022/08/08: Activists install a banner that says "The Liberation of Myanmar" during the anniversary of the '8888 Uprising' at Tha Phae Gate in Chiang Mai. On the 8th of August, Myanmar commemorated the 34th anniversary of the '8888 Uprising', also known as the People Power Uprising, which peaked on the 8th of August 1988. It was a series of nationwide demonstrations, marches and protests that began as a student movement in Yangon before spreading to the rest of the country. The demonstrations were held against the then-ruling Burma Socialist Programme Party (BSPP) regime, a one-party state headed by General Ne Win.
