Tannerella forsythia bacteria, computer illustration. This anaerobic Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium was previously called Bacteroides forsythus and Tannerella forsythensis. It has been identified in atherosclerotic lesions, and is implicated in periodontal diseases and bacterial vaginosis. Its presence in the mouth has been associated with an increased risk of oesophageal cancer.
