Today (Dec 8th) marks the anniversary of the death of Beatles legend John Lennon. In 1980 when the news broke it was a day that truly shook the music world.

Lennon was gunned down outside his New York apartment - the Dakota Building on the Upper West Side. John And Yoko are seen here poignantly in the spot he would be murdered just two weeks later.

And just 10 days before Lennon's untimely death photographer Allan Tannenbaum made these intimate photos of John and Yoko.

The pictures were intended to be part of a promo video for the album 'Double Fantasy'.
Both changed into kimonos for the shoot - John and Yoko used several settings in which they posed for the photographer.
Candid and intimate, here the photos show Lennon and Ono on a bed at a Soho art gallery
"Nudity was just another form of expression for them," Tannenbaum says. "They seemed very at ease..."
"I was thinking, I can't believe I am taking these photos."
But it was tragically to be one of the last photo shoots they ever did.
Days later as Tannenbaum was preparing the photos, the news broke that Lennon had been shot...

A few weeks after the tragedy the photographer met with a mourning Yoko, this time a widow and alone.

And it would be nearly 30 years before Tannenbaum released his pictures.
