John Selwyn Lloyd interviewed; ENGLAND: London: London Airport (LAP): INT John Selwyn Lloyd MP (Foreign Secretary) interview SOF - I think the position of the Yugoslav government as regards the situation in the Middle East is that they are as anxious as we are about developments there (in Russia) and they want to reduce tension, we had an extensive discussion of the things that are needed to try and reduce tension in the world, and I have no doubt that the policy of the Yugoslav government will be to do that / - We didn't make decisions ... we had an exchange of views of what was necessary, but I don't think it would be right to give the impression that we made a concrete plan which the two governments are going to persue together / - [On Eisenhower's decision to send arms to Jordan] The Soviet Union has supplied large quantities of arms to Syria, and I think it is inevitable in those circumstances that arms should be supplied to other countries by the West / - [Tito's view] We both hope that in this question of delivery of arms to the Middle East, there will be restraint, this has always been the British government's policy / TX 8.9.57 / 7.25pm & 10pm
