Houses below huge rock mountains of Meteora. - stock photo

Kastraki, Meteora, Thessaly, Greece - March 19, 2012: The gigantic rocks of Meteora tower above the towns of Kastraki and Kalambaka. Scientists believe these mountains were formed about 60 millions years ago. At that time the area was covered by sea but a series of earth movements pushed the seabed upwards, creating a high plateau and causing many vertical fault lines in the thick layer of sandstone. The huge rock mountains were then formed by weathering by water, wind and extremes of temperature.
