Caption: A prayer meeting in controversial Rhamaphosa township, the sight of some of the most brutal attacks on immigrants in the most recent wave of xenophobic violence. The prayer tent was situated on the site where a man was burnt to death 10 days before by anti-immigrant township dwellers. The meeting was attended by church groups who were bussed in and a minority of skeptical locals. The locals walked out of the meeting early on after a speaker appealed to them to respect immigrants and be patient about housing issues. A recent spate of xenophobic violence has left more than 100 people dead and over 30 000 displaced. The violence is often criminally based as well as a result of povery, political strategy for the upcoming elections. The slow pace at which government is being seen to address social services and unemployment in South Africa is seen as fuel for that fire.
